The Magneplanar myth
There's a persistent thought that Magneplanars are a difficult load for a modern amplifier. Paul does his best to diffuse that.

Shrinking the moving magnet phono cartridge
Переглядів 6 тис.10 годин тому
If a moving coil cartridge is better because of its mass, why not shrink the mass of a moving magnet's mass to match?

Does a transport need an internal DAC?
I have a Carver Sonic Hologram Generator which does this as well from the 1980’s works better with some speakers vs others very cool effect
30.7’s… now you’re talking!
Paul just being human.. and hickups is human..... Thanks for your daily vids Paul! 😊
I’ve owned 3 pairs of Maggie’s in my life, even though I realized after the first pair they aren’t really for me. My experience was, they are great for vocals and acoustic, 2nd to none, and they’ll do that with almost anything. But if you want to play rock n roll through them, or hip hop, you need something with some power to get any bass, and even then it’s not great. That was my experience anyway
Curious selection of Tubes / Valves on the shelf behind you Paul, are they used in PS products 😮
Next time please just rerecord the video.
why? You didnt understand the message? I did, all that matters
@@SantanKGhey1234 Yeah, sounded nasty
Any Rogers will do,Kef 101 reference as well, small Mission 731i,...
To wrap up this excellent explanation, you should beware of any speaker impedance hiccups. Below 2 ohms load is definitely dangerous territory for any amplifier to remain stable.
BUH! *scare you* :p
Hey Mr. Magnepan , before you switch amps a crossover upgrade would be a good move along with a stiffer stand brace. After then try a PS Audio . 😊
Still waiting for you to answer the question from Greenland correctly the other day... "Hey Paul, can I use an RCA cable as a [DIGITAL] coaxial from my CD player to my amp?"
Yes you can
@@fkaptijn7111 Yeahi know the answer, but Paul misunderstood the very young writer's question and answered regarding the ANALOGUE-OUTS... He misunderstood the question.
You practically can (nothing will burn or explode or destroy your ears) but it might be anything between an ok result and a major step backwards. Depending on how the cable you are using can properly transmit high frequencies in the megahertz range, and have a coaxial impedance close enough to 75 ohms. If not, the digital message will be distorted along the cable, or will suffer multiple reflections back and forth at the cable’s ends, adding up into an even more distorted digital stream signal into the DAC. So that the DAC may get confused between 0s and 1s regularly, which obviously will poison the ultimate decoding and analog signal result. So you can try and some RCA analog cables will certainly be ok, but some others will definitely be shitty. In any case, digital coaxial cables are those meant for proper transmission of digital streams. Don’t be confused by the fact that the RCA plugs are the same.
@@joso5554 I know this. Paul needs to re-answer the question for the person who wrote in from Greenland.
Oh and we demand all analog farts in videos 😂
Paul, given how cheap it is to measure (a £100 mic and stand) and REW is free, I think people serious about bass should read up a little and then you can actually see what's going on. It makes the job of setting much, much easier and although you may prefer something that looks 'worse' you can understand why and what's going on
The Magnepan 30.7 are ok but if the guy was really smart he would just get the PS Audio Aspen FR30's.
Why would anyone do that?
Would love some Maggie's but I need the room to put them in or it won't work
If I made UA-cam videos, would Never release one with a sneeze, cough, hiccup, fart, burp, or any other preventable fault.
ok
You can probably point the finger at Apogee for this misconception.
Even there, there was ONE Apogee model - the Scintilla - that was hard to drive because the impedance dropped to one ohm. The rest of their product line never fell below 3 ohms and had a nominal impedance of 4 ohms.
hic-up impedance is now a thing
I like the live feel of these videos. Paul could have redone this short video without hiccups, but no 🙂

My setup is about 7K and my pre&power amp is 30yrs old. I had them "upgraded" with an upgrade kit about 8 yrs ago. I stopped long ago believing what Audiophiles wrote. I took my daughter a few years ago to buy a new set of speakers. We listened to a number of them. We both preferred the less expensive speaker over the more expensive. When at home they sounded as good as in the listening room at the HiFi shop. And we have no "modified" room. And lets not forget this. It is about the music. If you are just listening to your sound system, you are missing the point.
Being an audiophile in some cases is like not trying to enjoy the MUSIC. We are so obsessed with the equipment and the perfectness of the sound, we loose our sense of music. It is music man, it is not perfect even in the concert hall! Just try to hear the music, you will be happy. Maybe too much investment raises our expectations. And generally too BIG systems have more problems and difficult to setup. Maybe you don’t need that much equipment. But this is the human nature 😀. Best wishes.
I don't see any reason to reinvent phono cartridges.
Where you have gone wrong is by being sucked into the world of the top end audiophile. You should be ashamed at spending so much money. I can't believe you did so really believing it was necessary to attain good sound. You did so because you wanted own, and boast about, £50k of hifi gear. Even telling us your system doesn't excite you is just another way to brag. You must have a big hole in your life.
Can a receiver that has no preamp outs be converted to a preamp only???
Less than 20 kHz for an average person
perhaps he should spend some money hiring a music sound adjustment Specialists to treat his room & calibrate his system
Yep ; cut Paul some slack; a busy dude no doubt ... is allowed a mulligan or two😉
Maybe Zach just doesn't like music. Maybe he lacks the emotional connection that music affords to some. I see this all the time with "audiophiles". I can't recall ever seeing it among musicians.
It's very big. I predict broken deals.
In this day and age, the cantilever could be made out of carbon fiber, the coil out of lightweight copper alloy, and the magnet out of neodymium-infused plastic polymer. We're still using 19th-century materials when we should be using 21st-century ones!
My modi3 dac has 3 digital inputs: usb, toslink and spdif. And from my experience USB is the way to go. Just plug any usb cable and the sound is amazing compared to other 2 interfaces where you have to buy expensive cables to achieve the similar level of sound quality.
“ you need a powerplant on every everything” translates to “ I love your money more than you do and happy to sell you anything at all, even this pointless snake oil product that does nothing at all except make me richer”
The problem is two fold. Listening to others opinions instead of actually listening. Assuming spending more always gets you more.
Some great advice here!
The equipment is so overpriced so is your expectation of the sound
Somewhat unclear answer.. Impedance stays the same because first stop inside the loudspeaker is the crossover from either terminals, which controls impedance based on frequency. There's no parallel wiring directly to the speakers, which indeed would change impedance. Only case I'd consider biamping is if the bottom end could gain from extra power. But I'd rather want a stronger amp/monoblock for that entire unit instead than muck about with double wiring and double amping.
Port on speaker on front or on back, what is best?
And here I am happy with my $30 bluetooth speakers. :)
Can I connect the pre amp out to my powered speakers?
Room size and treatment for sure. I bought my system by listening to it first in a demo room where it blew my mind, it sounded unbelievable. Brought it home and sounded like crap. Ended up selling it. Big systems need big space.
$50k on equipment always sets up for disappointment. Spend $500-1000 on what sounds good to you..and just enjoy the music.
Who says MC has lower mass, copper coils on iron cross, all dense materials vs a rather small magnet of samarian- cobalt like on a Stanton. But it doesn’t really matter as all that mass is in close proximity to the pivot point and contributes little to the inertia, like the heavy counterweight in a tonearm. The cantilever and stylus are far more important. Tapered aluminium is probably the lightest, and small shank stylus, also shorter cantilever (some Dynavector). In the 70’s exotic MM cartridges with unobtanium cantilevers(tubular beryllium, boron or sapphire) would state their effective mass in spec sheets, nobody does that anymore. The top MC cartridges today use heavy diamond cantilevers, so light mass is not what drives performance. Maybe it is market driven, Soundsmith makes low output versions because that’s what people expect in an expensive cartridge.
Kind of a confused answer. On the one hand you're saying "the less mass the better", yet on the other hand you're saying "I don't understand why you'd want to reduce the mass".
Yes, you can use a RCA cable as an COAX cable.
I think the mass was shrunk with the introduction of neodymium to give same field strength but smaller.
Get a full range Electrostatic LS and that worry is behind you ...😂
As usual from paul some very keen insights as to how to solve a problem without dumping further unnecessary money into it
I would bet “room treatment”.
The voltage output is a direct relationship between the number of coils moving through a specific magnetic field. All else equal, smaller magnets would be less voltage. Moving them down into the MC area. Variable reluctance. Fixed coil and magnet structure. Moving metal between them to vary the magnetic field that way. The metal is far less mass than either a magnet or coil. Acutex came out with a line using this after Audio Technica came out with their line which had the patented dual magnet V design. AT sued Acutex because they copied the dual magnetic V structure patent.
The Dire Straits - You and Your Friend, is an amazing track for demoing your system.
